DOT Physical Exams

Driving a bus or truck can be very demanding. As a professional driver, you must prioritize your's and the public's health at all costs. To help you achieve this goal, you need to take the DOT (Department of Transportation) physical. 


The Federal Motor Carrier Safety and Administration - FMCSA demands a DOT checkup for all commercial vehicle drivers. The exam ensures your ability to meet all necessary physical requirements for your vocation. It includes tolerating health risks posed by sitting on the driver's seat for extended periods.


Things to know if you are required to take the DOT physical exam.


You will receive a medical certificate once you pass. It allows you to drive and operate a commercial vehicle for 2 years. However, you must not have an underlying physical or mental condition requiring continuous treatment and testing.


Health conditions that require an annual DOT exam:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease


NOTE:
If you have chronic high blood pressure, you may be required to undergo DOT physicals every 3 months. You must be treated and cleared to pass the exam.

What to Expect During a DOT Physical?


You need to provide your medical health history by filling out a form.


Provide a detailed answer for 

  • Medications you take
  • Previous surgeries, if any
  • Use of alcohol, tobacco, or other substances
  • Your current medical conditions and symptoms, if any


You can fill out the form ahead of the appointment.


The tests include:

 

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Blood pressure
  • Another health criterion


You will also undergo a urinalysis to determine your blood sugar levels and other health criteria. The urinalysis will also be used in drug testing. Blood samples are also required to check for another in-office testing. Each test is performed to ensure that you are healthy enough to fulfill your duties as a commercial vehicle driver.
